Passo Gardena to Badia Abtei

Sarg to Plock P4 107

July 10, 2008   Al and I left our hotel in Wolkenstein at 7:30a the next morning and walked up to the ski lift station where we caught the first ride up to Passo Gardena (2121m – 6959ft) (8:45). From the pass we took the trail signed 2 for the Rifugio Puez which ascended the grassy slopes above the pass. After about twenty minutes we began ascending through rocky terraces more steeply up toward the Forcela Cier. This passage was one of the most enchanting of the entire trek and passed eroded spires and heather punctuated with grand views of the Gruppo Sella across the valley to the south. After passing through the gap at the Forcela Cier (2469m – 8100ft) (9:40a) we made an ascending traverse across a rocky basin to the Forcela de Crespeina (2582m – 8471ft) (10:10a). We paused here for a little while and enjoyed the view across the huge plateau with the Rifugio Puez perched on the opposite side. Soon we were on our way again and crossed the undulating plateau to the Forcela Ciampai Somaturcia (2366m – 7762ft) (11:00a).
