Trek from Washington DC to Pittsburgh

Milepost 184.5, the canal terminus. The towpath comes to an end here, merging with a walkway that leads down from the embankment to the plaza at the foot of the Western Maryland Railroad Station.

Trek From Washington DC to Pittsburgh: Near Terminus of the C and O Trail at Cumberland, Maryland Near Terminus of the C and O Trail at Cumberland, Maryland

It was with a sense of accomplishment that I left the terminus and walked through town searching out a hotel room to rest after the 187 mile trip from Washington and the completion of the first leg of my transcontinental journey. Later that evening I met Steve and Mary once again and celebrated over pizza and beer. From Cumberland I drove back to Washington the next day met with Byron for a steak dinner and then headed to the airport for the flight home. I would return in a couple of months and continue my hike, starting in Cumberland and walking the Allegany Highlands Trail to Pittsburgh.
